Glimmering

Voices, violins and theorbo

Glimmering was written for a performance at Royal Academy of Music, titled “Where Shall my Soul Repose?”. It explored transience of all things, where clouds are both a natural metaphor of this and embody a sense of Marian fertility.

Glimmering is therefore an exploration of how things pass and tells the story of a summer storm rising and the afterglow that follows. It makes reference to both the Persian saying این نیز بگذرد (this too shall pass) and Cozzolani’s Ave Maria. In the creation of this piece, the text very much emerged out of the music, which itself emerged out of a wonderful session with Louis Moisan, exploring the Theorbo.

From the bottom of my heart, my gratitude goes to Daisy Livesey, Hera Protopapas, Louis Moisan, Sophia Mücke, Fernando Santiage Serrano dos Santos and Jacob Fitzgerald for helping this piece come into being and for being so gracious with my absurd musical demands. This piece is dedicated to all of them.
