Within a Grain
20th June 2021
‘To see the World in a Grain of Sand
And Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity for an hour’.
These lines by Blake got me thinking, as Will will. What would the musical expression of that sentiment be? The self-enveloping nature of all things? In a way music seems to do it already, but how to share or expand that across time?
Within a Grain is an a composition for any collection of instruments, which are then fed through a series of plugin’s – particularly a microtonal layered delay. The piece is structured losely and the perform improvises on a series of simple cells with some rhythmic variation. Here are a few recordings.
The score, with its details and unique plug-ins may be purchased. I’d love to hear from you if you intend to perform the piece!
Within a Grain is an electro-acoustic composition for up to four unpredefined instruments. It consists of improvisation on musical cells which is then digital processed; the piece is the relationship between live improvisation and effected sound.
